What Is an MPO to LC Breakout Cable?

An MPO to LC breakout cable — also known as an MPO-LC fan-out jumper or MPO fan-out assembly — is a factory-terminated patch assembly with one MPO/MTP multi-fiber connector on the trunk side and multiple LC or SC duplex connectors fanning out on the device side. It converts a high-density MPO backbone into individual device-ready legs.

In HUAXIN MPO pre-terminated patch panels, the MPO-LC branch jumper lives inside the module cassette: the rear MPO adapter accepts the incoming trunk, while the front LC duplex adapters present clean ports for short equipment patch cords. The same fan-out construction is also supplied as a standalone cable for custom racks and SAN environments.

Step 1 — MPO trunk: The factory-terminated MPO/MTP backbone lands at the rear of the MPO-LC cassette or patch panel.

Use an MPO-MPO patch cord when both devices or cassettes already have MPO ports, such as spine-to-leaf 40G/100G links. Use an MPO-LC breakout when the backbone is MPO but the endpoint equipment — SAN, switches, servers, transceivers — has only duplex LC or SC ports. What fiber counts and LC leg counts are available?▾

HUAXIN supplies 8, 12, 16 and 24 fiber MPO-LC breakout assemblies. A 12-fiber MPO typically fans out to 6 duplex LC legs, a 24-fiber MPO to 12 duplex LC legs, an 8-fiber MPO to 4 duplex LC legs and a 16-fiber MPO to 8 duplex LC legs. Simplex LC and SC leg options are also available on request.

What is the difference between an MPO-LC breakout cable and an MPO-LC cassette?▾

An MPO-LC cassette is a metal or plastic module that houses an MPO adapter on the rear, LC adapters on the front and a factory-installed MPO-LC breakout jumper inside. An MPO-LC breakout cable is the standalone cable assembly itself — it can be ordered loose for custom racks or pre-installed in HUAXIN cassettes. Both use the same fan-out construction and performance class.

Should I choose UPC or APC polish for the LC legs?▾

Use APC (angled physical contact) when the link uses single-mode and the transceivers or equipment specify APC — this gives the best return loss (≥55 dB standard, ≥60 dB Elite) and minimizes back-reflection on PON or DWDM systems. Use UPC for multimode VCSEL links or legacy single-mode equipment where return-loss requirements are lower (≥40 dB standard, ≥50 dB Elite).

Single-mode or multimode for an MPO-LC breakout?▾

Use multimode OM3/OM4/OM5 for short-reach links inside a data hall where the transceivers are VCSEL-based (40GBASE-SR4, 100GBASE-SR4/SR10, 400GBASE-SR8). Use single-mode G652D/G657A/OS2 for longer runs, building-to-building links or when future-proofing to 400G/800G. HUAXIN supplies both with identical breakout geometries.

What length and branch length should I specify?▾

The overall length is the distance from the MPO connector to the fan-out point plus any required service loop. Standard patch-cord lengths are 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 m, with custom lengths available. The individual LC/SC branch legs are typically 0.5–1.5 m for in-cassette use and can be customized for standalone harnesses. Send your rack layout and we will recommend the correct overall length, fan-out style and leg length.
